Stan Dahl: How to Avoid Timewasters

AS2-timewasters-blog-imageIn an excerpt from the Action Seminar, Stan Dahl shares his strategies for success in business by avoiding habits that use up your time.

Stan’s comments:

That is the first step to productivity, honestly, how structured is your day, in my opinion, Art.  Do you have some type of ritual?  If you’re focused on productivity…I don’t mean that you should live your life like this, but that’s your foundation.  Do you have some way to structure your day?  That’s really the first step.

So, someone might have a child at home…everyone has some type of distraction.  The first thing I would do is not write down everything you do.  That might help you get the big picture, but you are not going to budget your time by having 50 minutes a day for this, an hour for this.  The time it takes you to do this would eat up hours of your time.

The number one thing that John and I run into is that people bitch to us about that.  I try to suss it out of them in the conversation.  I’ll teach you the trick.  I’ll say “did you see American Idol last night?”  If they say anything involved with Americal Idol, this conversation is over.  About productivity.

If you are in the phase of your life where you are going into business, and you know who is America’s best last year, just stop asking that question.  That is the answer to the question.  That’s the hour a week you’ve got.  And if you just take that hour a week and you focus on something you would be amazed where you are.

That is what you want to concentrate on.  What can I shave off?  I have my hobby, I like football.  That is a time-waster, but I will carve out that amount of time because I like football.
