Member Hotseat: Transforming a draft into a finished letter
John and I sat down with MRIC member David to critique a draft of a direct mail letter.
David wrote it for his father, who is a home-improvement contractor with 25 years’ experience.
This is a great way to get started in writing copy…write for someone you know. You will get experience and, hopefully, a good testimonial
And, they will probably be a bit more forgiving than someone you bring in off the street.
John explained waht David had to think about in order to move from first draft to finished letter…
We discussed:
- The use of slang in a letter
- Push vs Pull marketing
- How to create a simple but powerful message by concentrating on the fundamentals
- The purpose of a first draft and how it fits into the process.
- How to select the testimonials and how to flesh them out.
- How to get your customers’ help to add reality to your copy…the good, the bad, and the ugly
And to always consider what your prospect really needs to hear (as opposed to what you think you should tell him).
There is something her for everyone, from those just starting out to more advanced writers
