In an excerpt from the first Action Seminar, Stan Dahl explains how to succeed in business by breaking down your goals into tasks you can take action on.
His comments:
What we would like to do is start you off with a bit of an exercise. We are going to refer back to this about every hour for the next couple of days. So that it is right in front of you, in black and white, we would like you to write down, if possible, something that would be your primary goal for this year. Now, if you have multiple goals, that’s ok. We don’t want a list of 100 of them, but it’s OK just to have, right in front of you, a list of the things that you want to accomplish this year. Do that first. There’s a couple of more steps, but just take a couple of minutes and prepare your list of goals. Let’s say, as in everything, keep it in groups of 3 or 6.
The next phase of this…it could be the ones you have in front of you already or maybe you need to add to your list a bit. What John talked about is the concept of a final, big goal. I’ve seen this work for a lot of people, but for most it is just too vague, having that board with a list of things. Halfway through the year you will have made progress, but you realize that you really didn’t want half of the stuff and you find you are as lost as the day you started.
I am more of a believer in making it as concrete as possible. Work toward specific things. So, if some of your goals are big things, and I am assuming most of them were, you have to understand that that is not “step 1”. It is too big a thing to bite off all at once. So, the next thing I’d like you to think about is setting up 3 to 6 intermediate goals. What are the things you are going to have to do, or accomplish, as reasonable stepping stones (tools) on the way to that.
For example, if you want to make a million dollars online or $100,000 online from a website, and you don’t have a website yet…some of you are in that boat because you have offline businesses and want to learn more about making money online…that’s obviously a step. If you are worried about Search Engine Optimization, natural search of your website, and you don’t have a website, stop doing SEO stuff right now. Put things in order.
So, take one or two of your goals …this is not meant to be a comprehensive list, or one that you are going to hold yourself to, you may revise this Monday morning…take one or two of your goals and put down 3 to 6 steps that you have to accomplish along the way. If you are flying through that there is a chance that your steps are too big. Do it again. Any way…spatially, or indent, break them down into sub-steps…in order to do a website I would have to do a couple of things…
