Unless you have been under a rock the past few years, you know that more and more people are using mobile devices to surf the internet.
Google is continuing to cater more and more to their needs, and last week announced that they would be instituting “mobile-first indexing” of webpages.
This means that they will be using the mobile version of webpages in their ranking of sites, and that if you depend on search results your sites had better be mobile-friendly.
In their words:
“To recap, our crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have typically used the desktop version of a page’s content, which may cause issues for mobile searchers when that version is vastly different from the mobile version. Mobile-first indexing means that we’ll use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our – primarily mobile – users find what they’re looking for.”
They also announced that, starting in July, they will be looking more closely at how quickly your pages load. In this article we explained how to find out how fast your site loads.
